Start of the 2026 Whitewater Season in the Katahdin Region

The start of the 2026 whitewater rafting season in the Katahdin Region brings one of Maine’s most exciting outdoor traditions back to the West Branch of the Penobscot River. Beginning around Memorial Day Weekend and continuing through summer, rafting companies based in and around Millinocket welcome visitors for high-energy river trips surrounded by deep forest, granite gorges, remote wilderness, and unforgettable views of Mount Katahdin.

A major season-opening highlight is the return of Northern Outdoors’ Penobscot River rafting trips, operating from the Katahdin Adventure Base Camp at the Big Moose Inn in Millinocket. For 2026, Northern Outdoors lists Penobscot River rafting from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with Class I–V whitewater, trips for ages 12 and up. Their Penobscot River experience includes a 14-mile adventure through dramatic scenery, steep rock walls, Class V rapids, waterfalls, forested shoreline, and the iconic river corridor near Baxter State Park.

Other established outfitters also make the Katahdin Region one of New England’s top whitewater destinations. New England Outdoor Center offers Penobscot River rafting and family float trips, including easier river experiences with views of Katahdin and opportunities to enjoy Maine wildlife. Local rafting companies such as Three Rivers Whitewater, North Country Rivers, and Penobscot Adventures also help connect visitors with guided whitewater trips, lodging, group adventures, and outdoor recreation in the Millinocket area.

The river season also includes one of Millinocket’s most popular paddling events: the 2026 Millinocket X-Stream Canoe Race, scheduled for Saturday, June 6. This annual 7.4-mile whitewater race runs from Millinocket Lake Dam to Kermit Crandall Park, sending paddlers through technical Class II–III rapids, wave trains, and the always-exciting Turtle Pit. Racers can plan ahead, review the course, and register before race day, while spectators are welcome at the finish line in downtown Millinocket to cheer on competitors as they cross. Together, rafting trips, river races, lodging, restaurants, and outdoor outfitters make early summer an ideal time to plan a full Katahdin weekend. Paddle hard, explore Millinocket, enjoy the Penobscot River corridor, and celebrate the return of whitewater season in Maine’s North Woods.

The Katahdin Woods and Waters National Scenic Byway provides access to some of the best whitewater rafting experiences on the Penobscot River, connecting travelers to the wild landscapes, gateway communities, and unforgettable river adventures that define the Katahdin Region.
