A new accessible trail is opening this summer in the Debsconeag Lakes Wilderness Area, expanding opportunities for more people to experience one of the Katahdin region’s most beautiful natural landscapes.
The Nature Conservancy in Maine will celebrate the grand opening of the Pockwockamus All Persons Trail on July 15 from 2–4 p.m. The new three-quarter-mile loop is designed for families and visitors across the mobility spectrum, with wide, gentle slopes and a crushed-dust surface that make the trail easier to navigate.
The trailhead is located three miles down Hurd Pond Road from Abol Bridge, placing visitors close to the West Branch of the Penobscot River and some of the region’s most iconic views. Along the route, hikers can enjoy the sights, sounds and textures of the forest, scenic views of Pockwockamus Falls, and the unforgettable presence of Katahdin rising above the landscape.
The project was created in collaboration with the Penobscot Nation and includes interpretive panels, sculpture features and an app-based audio tour. These elements center the voices and perspectives of the people who have been in relationship with this place since time immemorial, adding cultural depth and meaning to the visitor experience.
Accessibility features will include designated parking spaces that meet ADA requirements and a non-gendered restroom that meets ADA requirements.
The Pockwockamus All Persons Trail offers a welcoming new way to explore the Debsconeag Lakes Wilderness Area, connect with the West Branch, and experience the natural and cultural richness of the Katahdin region.
Grand Opening: July 15, 2–4 p.m.
