Description

The Pockwockamus All Persons Trail in the Debsconeag Lakes Wilderness Area of Katahdin, West of Millinocket and the Lakes Region, is a MUST VISIT! This trail opened in July of 2026 geared to "all persons", meaning it's an accessible trail for users looking for a shorter walk/hike, users with mobility devices including wheel chairs, aging users, groups with limited time, and more.

Even the most seasoned hikers will enjoy and value this trail. In addition to being technically designed for accessibility, the trail was planned and executed in an expert way that makes it so much more than just an "accessible" trail. The strikingly beautiful meanders through erratic boulders; the carefully chosen route that offers views of Hurd Stream, Pockwockamus Falls, the West Branch of the Penobscot, and more; the artful interpretive installations, including a striking public art sculpture at the trailhead recognizing the Wabanaki heritage of the region - both created by members of the Penobscot Nation; the amenities including numerous stone benches along the path, two accessible picnic tables at the trail head and the best view point on the river, the bathroom, and large parking lot; and finally the location just 2.09 miles off the Golden Road that offers a beautiful and quaint drive along the river and past several other view points and camp sites.

In the winter the Hurd Pond Road becomes a snowmobile trail. Cross-country skiers and snowshoers are welcome and encouraged to enjoy the Pockwockamus All Persons Trail during the winter months.

A wonderful public art sculpture of Wabanaki heritage welcomes you at the trailhead. Even if you are not going to walk the trail, this, along with the quaint drive off the Golden Road, are worth the visit alone. There's a picnic table and bathroom at the trailhead also.

The spearhead sculpture at the trailhead is part of a growing series of sculptures of Gluskabe’s tools. Gluskabe is a foundational culture hero and magical figure in the mythology of the Wabanaki peoples. He is said to have created the Penobscot River. Check out the axe head at the Lumberman's Museum in Patten at the other end of the byway!

Drive slow and look out for wildlife!

If you are visiting the Katahdin Woods & Waters National Scenic Byway, Baxter State Park, Nahmakanta Public Reserve Land, Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument, white water rafting the West Branch of the Penobscot, or visiting one of the fantastic communities in Katahdin, the Pockwockamus All Persons Trail in Debsconeag Lakes Wilderness Area should also be on your list. There are also wonderful campsites near by.

Abol Bridge Campground & Store is only about .1 miles from the turn on the Golden Road, offering even more convenience, along with spectacular views.

Pets are not allowed in the Debsconeag Lakes Wilderness Area except for service animals and at the Ice Caves, where they must remain on leash.

Location: 2.09 miles down the Hurd Pond Road (known on Google as "Water Way"), South from the Golden Road.
