Description
The Peavey Brook Outdoor Center (PBOC) is located along Route 11 in Patten, at the town line with Mount Chase. PBOC is one of the Katahdin region’s newest outdoor recreation destinations. It's being developed by the Elliotsville Foundation in partnership with the Outdoor Sport Institute (OSI) as part of the Katahdin Area Trails (KAT) initiative. This growing trail system offers year-round opportunities for mountain biking, hiking, trail running, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and more in a beautiful working forest setting. SEE MAP >
The 300-acre property currently features more than five miles of purpose-built, non-motorized trails, with additional trail construction planned over the next several years. Designed to accommodate beginners and intermediate users alike, the network includes smooth green-rated singletrack, flowing blue trails, and dedicated downhill "gravity" trails for mountain bikers looking for a little more excitement. Several routes climb gently to a scenic Katahdin Viewpoint, offering rewarding views of Maine's highest mountain before descending through rolling forests.
Gear, like mountain bikes and x-country skis, is available for free for members of the Katahdin Gear Library and at VERY reasonable prices for non-members for use at the Peavey Brook Outdoor Center and other locations around Katahdin. Details can be found here https://www.outdoorsi.org/kgl.
Although mountain biking is a major draw, the Peavey Brook Outdoor Center is designed as a true multi-use recreation area. It is co-managed by the Outdoor Sport Institute (OSI) and Mt. Chase Lodge. Visitors are welcome to hike, run, snowshoe, cross-country ski, ride Class 1 e-bikes on designated trails, or play disc golf at no charge. In winter, the trail network transforms into an inviting destination for nordic skiing, fat biking, and snowshoeing, making it a four-season recreation hub.
The trailhead is located at 865 Shin Pond Road (Route 11) in Patten. It includes convenient visitor amenities such as parking, picnic tables, potable water, and a public restroom inside the Outdoor Center building. While the property intersects with ATV and snowmobile corridors, motorized vehicles are not permitted on the bike and ski trails themselves, ensuring a peaceful experience for non-motorized users. Cell service can be limited. Downloading trail maps before your visit is recommended.
Leashed pets are welcome at the Peavey Brook Outdoor Center except for the gravity trails. Please be sure to clean-up after your furry friends, and take special care during winter months to maintain the groomed surfaces for other users.
Just a short drive away, Mt. Chase Lodge complements the Peavey Brook experience with its own network of public, non-motorized trails developed in partnership with Outdoor Sports Instituate. Visitors can enjoy additional hiking, mountain biking, trail running, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing directly from the lodge, including the beginner-friendly Lower Stump Dump Trail and Lodge Loop. Together, the Peavey Brook Outdoor Center and Mt. Chase Lodge are helping establish the Patten–Mount Chase area as one of northern Maine's fastest-growing outdoor recreation destinations.
Whether you're introducing your family to mountain biking, heading out for a peaceful forest hike, enjoying a trail run, or exploring the North Woods on skis after a fresh snowfall, the Peavey Brook Outdoor Center and the nearby Mt. Chase Lodge trails offer outstanding four-season recreation just minutes from Patten, Shin Pond, Baxter State Park, and Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument. With additional trail construction planned through 2028, this growing network promises even more opportunities to experience the Katahdin region on foot, bike, or skis.
Potable water is available on property in the bathroom and on the side of the building.
