Katahdin Gear Library Initiative

The Katahdin Gear Library (KGL) is a gear-lending library, outdoor adventure hub, and public space for people of all ages to access equipment and tools, information and leadership, and to connect with people around a common interest in outdoor adventure and recreation.

The KGL has two locations in Millinocket and Patten. Millinocket has regular years that flex with the season. Check their Facebook for current hours. Both Patten and Millinocket are also by appointment.

Members who hold a library card from Millinocket, East Millinocket, Sherman, Patten, or Katahdin Public can use their library card at the KGL. Visitors can purchase a library card at any one of these libraries for $20. With a library card you get one day rental for free, and every day after that is half price. So, to be clear, you can rent a canoe on Monday...for free, a paddle board on Tuesday...for free, a backpack on Wednesday...for free, a kayak on Thursday...for free, and a mountain bike on Friday...for free. Yes, you read that correctly!

KGL staff and volunteers can help you decide where to go too, and give you inside local tips!! Just get a library card, sign their waiver, load the gear, and you're off!

When they say they are a "public space for people of all ages", they mean it. They have free wifi, space to sit, a back shop next door, and a green space out front.

The Katahdin Gear Library rents out:

Winter: Cross-country skis, snowshoes, fat tire bikes
Spring/Summer/Fall: Mountain bikes, canoes, kayaks, & paddle boards
Year round: Backpacks

Please note, the KGL does not sell gear or stock spare parts. They rent gear they have, and have a space and tools and know-how to help you work on your gear.
