Island Falls River Walk

The Island Falls River Walk is a year-round loop trail just off exit 276. It is about .6 miles from the Island Falls town center, across the street from Porter's Family Restaurant located at 1143 Crystal Rd. in Island Falls. The loop trail is an easy all-ages trail that takes 20 - 45 minutes. It runs along the Mattawamkeag River and Sly Brook. It's a pet-friendly trail - please pick up after your pets. Watch your step for roots and uneven surfaces. The trail was built and is maintained by volunteers and the Town of Island Falls.

The trailhead is at Brooks Equipment, on the right if you're heading East, across from Porter’s Gas Station and Family Restaurant. A Town of Island Falls sign is next to the entrance on Crystal Rd./Rt. 159. When you enter the business campus, the wooden trail sign is on the right. The trail begins as a decent down an embankment.

The trail is well marked and has been adopted by a local couple who groom it and have placed features along the way like benches and tables. This trail is walked by people of all ages and fitness in 15 - 45 minutes. The trail takes you clockwise along Mattawamkeag River and back on Sly Brook. You could walk it counterclockwise also. The trail is cut through a variety of terrain and habitat. You can see deer, water birds, beaver works and in spring, beautiful flowers such as trout lilly, as well as many kinds of fern. A friend of a trail steward, and retired game warden, spotted a nesting bass just a few paces from the trail.

The trail is carry in/ carry out and pet friendly. Please clean up after your pet.

The trail is about an 8th of a mile from the Opera House, a new bakery, and the Tingley House, home of the town’s historic artifact and ephemera collection. Also nearby is Sewall House of Yoga Retreat. This was the Sewall home and was visited by Teddy Roosevelt, friend of the Sewall family. Donna Sewall bought the family house and hosts guests and gives both yoga sessions and instruction. Frequently her guests practice yoga on the trails and scenic places in the area.
