Welcome to Grindstone BBQ in Medway, Maine - located a half mile off 95 at the corner of Rt. 11 & Rt. 157, on the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Scenic Byway, and on the ATV ITS 110 connector. If you're heading into the Katahdin region to visit Baxter State Park, the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, to raft the Penobscot River, or any of the other amazing things in Katahdin from late May to mid-October, this roadside eatery is a must stop for hearty food and welcoming service.
ATV Trailhead Parking: Located directly on ATV connector trail 110, 4-5 trailer parking spots are available on a 1st come 1st serve basis, free of charge. Park to the right of the black mailbox off the Grindstone Rd.
Grindstone BBQ serves food made on-site with all homemade ingredients. Their tagline is "No frozen mystery meat. No shortcuts. Just real food made by people who were here before the sunrise." Kyrie, Dale, and sometimes Mom (not sure if she's Kyrie's mom or Dale's) make all the ingredients, serve all the food, and last time we stopped by were painting the front of the ice cream stand. They've been operating since the eclipse, and are looking forward to many more summers to come as they build up the property year after year. Combined with the convenient location and fun ice cream menu, the outside seating and a bathroom make it an easy choice for anyone heading into or out of the Katahdin region between late May and mid-October.
Dale usually starts smoking a new batch of BBQ each week on Wednesday morning. Showing his commitment to quality BBQ, Dale drove down to Tennessee to get Grindstone BBQ's smoker (see Dale and his smoker in the pictures). When asked why her drove to Tennessee for a smoker he replied "it's the one I wanted." They use dried oak from the property to prepare their BBQ. They offer brisket, pulled pork, chicken, pickle fries, cheese grenades, moose grenades, smoked mac & cheese, a "heart attack" burger, "pig candy" burnt ends, and MUCH more. Good local folks, home made ingredients, convenient location for drivers on the Byway and ATV riders looking for trailhead parking with great food - it's a no-brainer.
