Description

The Dolby Flowage Boat Launch is a conveniently located boat launch that's great for visitors with canoes and kayaks. Dolby flowage (or Dolby Pond), both North and South of the bridge is shallow and known to have numerous stumps. It can be dangerous if you do not have local knowledge. Though this boat launch is used for some trailers and motored boats, it is recommended for canoe and kayak use only until confident local knowledge is gained. There is parking for approximately 5 vehicles.

The causeway over Dolby Flowage marks the border between Millinocket and East Millinocket. It provides beautiful views, especially at sunset and sunrise. Though the flowage/pond itself is in East Millinocket, this boat launch on the West side of the causeway is within the boundary of Millinocket. A rest stop existed in the past on the East side of the causeway and remains marked on some maps. There is no bathroom available on either side of the causeway today.

The Dolby Flowage (or Dolby Pond) in East Millinocket, Maine, was created between 1906 and 1907 when the Great Northern Paper Company dammed the West Branch of the Penobscot River and Schoodic Stream. The impoundment was built to provide hydroelectric power for a new paper mill and to facilitate the sorting and transporting of log drives. The creation of the flowage significantly altered the local landscape and swallowed up early settlement history.

Location: The boat launch is located at the intersection of the Old Huber Road and Rt. 157/Main St. in Millinocket, Maine.
