Description

Baxter State Park is a vast wilderness area located in north-central Maine.  The park was established by a gift from former Maine Governor Percival P. Baxter in 1931. His vision was to preserve a large tract of wilderness for public enjoyment and to protect the region's natural beauty.

The park is situated in the northern part of the state, near the town of Millinocket. It covers over 200,000 acres and includes diverse landscapes, including mountains, forests, lakes, and streams.

The centerpiece of Baxter State Park is Mount Katahdin (called just "Katahdin" since "K’taadn" in Passamaquoddy means “highest land”). It's the tallest peak in Maine at 5,267 feet (1,605 meters). It is the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, a popular destination for hikers seeking to complete the iconic long-distance trail.

Baxter State Park offers a wide range of outdoor activities for visitors, including hiking, camping, fishing, canoeing, wildlife viewing, and photography. There are over 200 miles of hiking trails within the park, ranging from easy walks to challenging climbs.

The park is known for its stunning natural beauty, with rugged mountain terrain, pristine lakes, and dense forests. It is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including moose, black bear, deer, and various bird species.

Baxter State Park is managed as a wilderness area, with minimal development and limited facilities. Visitors are encouraged to practice Leave No Trace principles and to respect the natural environment.

Due to its popularity, Baxter State Park operates on a reservation system for camping and parking during peak seasons. Visitors are advised to plan ahead and make reservations in advance, especially for popular trails and campsites.

Baxter State Park offers a unique opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to experience the beauty and solitude of Maine's wilderness, with Mount Katahdin serving as a symbol of the park's rugged spirit and natural grandeur.
