Description

The Ambajejus Boomhouse is a historic site located near the West Branch of the Penobscot River, close to Ambajejus Lake in Millonocket, Maine. The Boomhouse played a crucial role in the logging industry, serving as a key location for sorting and managing logs that were floated down the river. These logs were gathered in the "boom," a barrier or enclosure that allowed loggers to sort and guide them to sawmills.

The Ambajejus Boomhouse itself served as a shelter and workspace for the river drivers and loggers who managed the log drives. It was a place where they could eat, sleep, and organize the logs that had been driven down the river. This historical site is a reminder of Maine's rich logging history, particularly in the 19th and early 20th centuries, when the state's forests were a major source of timber for the nation.

Today, the Boomhouse appeals to historians, tourists, and those exploring the natural beauty and history of the Katahdin region. It represents a unique part of the cultural and industrial heritage of the area. The Ambajejus Boomhouse has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973.
